The "Magic" Moment

          What I am about to tell you may not seem like a “magic bullet” at first glance  but... IT IS. This one SHIFT made ALL the difference, allowing me to FINALLY make rapid progress while spending half the time working out.

          “Time” is the major reason I believe this is THE optimal way for a Dad to workout.


          It took YEARS of frustration before stumbling across this... so I want you to pay close attention and really take this hard-earned lesson to heart.


          We all know a bit about fitness from our past in sports and from what we’ve heard at the gym. The mistake I was making and YOU probably are too... is NOT changing my current strategy to match my life circumstances as a Dad. I simply followed the conventional workout “wisdom” everyone repeats.


          What James showed me flipped the way I viewed working out upside down... and the slow progress CHANGED too. What he showed me was the power of intense, short workouts, hitting the major muscle groups in a way that mimics real world application... the OPPOSITE of what I had been doing all these years.


          In most health clubs you’re taught to isolate muscles, work them in slow controlled movements, and work each muscle only once or twice a week.


          The main problem with that on top of wasted time - I discovered - is your body learns to become inefficient - robbing it of the ability to leverage synergy - muscles groups working together as a system. As is often the case, it turns out the “whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.”

          My failure in the past can be directly linked to not accounting for two major challenges. If your program does not intentionally seek to overcome these, it will be virtually impossible for you to succeed as a “working dad.”

1. Homeostasis - Your body’s incredible drive to maintain status quo

          Body transformation requires burning more calories than you take in. As dads we’re looking to do this in a sustainable, healthy way, maintaining the energy we need to handle our daily responsibilities - NOT just radically restrict calories and waste away.


          So we need to steadily run a deficit that is significant, but not so high that it drains our energy. This is easy to do when you first start exercising because your body hasn’t adjusted to the extra calories you’re burning.

          When I would start a routine I would see some results... and then to my extreme disappointment... they would FADE.


          It turns out that our body interprets the new routine as something that needs adjusting to. It learns to do your routine with the least effort possible, signals you to eat more, and soon enough your body is back to a stable pattern.


          As you stick to your program and lose some weight, your body starts to expend less calories. Most people don’t scale down their calorie intake to account for this because we’re so used to eating as our bigger, former selves. Again, the result is stagnation or even a trend back toward weight gain.


          Homeostasis is so powerful that you have to consciously account for it in your program unless you want to be in the gym 10 plus hours a week.


2. Time - The demands of your work and family need to be planned for from the beginning or you won’t continue

          When you look at the people in the gym who really get results - they are there six days a week. Either they don’t have families, they’re independently wealthy and time is no issue... or they have families who resent them.

          If you’re trying to live a complete life... you won’t be able to sustain long hours in the gym. Eventually your other duties will rightfully PULL on you and overtake this lesser priority.


          With these two challenges in mind, counter them with...
1. Intensity - Teach your body and mind that the new homeostasis is “change”

          This principle is a learned mindset that you can adjust to. Most people progress through a routine not paying attention to recovery times.


          The best way to keep your body guessing and avoid “coasting” is to not only change what you do, but increase the amount of work you can do in a fixed time period. The mistake most guys make is extending the length of their workouts as they get in better shape.


          Don’t expand the time. Expand the workload. 

          Your body is then forced to submit to the fact that change is the new norm. It is not unhealthy - just different than what it is used to. Soon it will become a metabolic monster, expending calories like an active teenager.

          When you practice this mentality... you’ll have a new standard of when a workout actually qualifies as a workout and will stop kidding yourself with routines that your body just coasts through.

          This not only increases the total load you put on your muscles, resulting in greater calorie burning after your workout, but it also taxes your cardio system, sparing you from having to spend extra time dedicated to cardio training.


          You’ll have all the extra cardio training you need - the way it was meant to be - feeling energized to live a more active life OUTSIDE of the gym.


2. Full-body training focused on the largest muscles

          Splitting up your muscles each workout, like most men do, means you would have to train each muscle only twice a week... forcing you to do a minimum of four strength workouts per week to make even modest progress.

          If you work your whole body each workout, you can do just three efficient workouts per week or four if you choose, but each muscle would get more frequent training. Studies show that more frequent shorter strength training is superior to longer less frequent strength training.
